BrightWise Privacy Policy
BrightWise · by Daybreak Labs
App: BrightWise · Developer: Daybreak Labs · Effective date: October 16, 2026
BrightWise is a brightness slider and learning app for Android. This policy explains, in plain language, what data BrightWise uses, why, where it is kept, and what you can do about it.
The short version
- BrightWise has no account. You never sign up or log in.
- Your brightness history, app-by-app preferences and settings stay on your phone. We don't upload them to our servers.
- We use Google Firebase to get crash reports and basic, anonymous usage statistics so we can fix bugs and improve the app.
- Purchases are handled by Google Play. We never see your card details.
- We don't sell your data, and the app shows no ads.
1. Data that stays on your phone
To learn the brightness you like, BrightWise saves on your device:
- Brightness changes: when you move the slider, the time of day, day of the week, brightness before and after, the light sensor reading, and which app was open at that moment (its package name, for example com.example.maps).
- What it learned: your preferred brightness by time of day and per app.
- Settings: slider side, size, color and style, calibration of your thumb's edge zone, language, onboarding progress and trial status.
This data is stored in the app's private storage and is never sent to Daybreak Labs. If you use Android's own backup to your Google account, Android may back up your settings; your brightness history and training data are excluded from that backup.
2. Data sent off your phone
- Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics): when the app crashes, a report is sent with technical details: phone model, Android version, app version, time and the error. It does not include your brightness history or the apps you use.
- Usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase): anonymous events such as which onboarding step you reached or whether you opened the upgrade screen, plus device type, country (from the network) and an app-instance ID. Firebase may also read the Android advertising ID; we don't use it for ads.
- Purchases (Google Play Billing): when you buy the BrightWise upgrade, Google Play processes the payment and tells the app whether you own it. Google's privacy policy applies to that payment.
These services are run by Google, which acts as our service provider. See Firebase privacy and the Google Privacy Policy. Firebase keeps Crashlytics data for about 90 days and Analytics data for up to 14 months.
3. Permissions and why we ask
- Modify system settings (WRITE_SETTINGS): to change your screen brightness. This is the main thing the app does.
- Display over other apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW): to show the thin brightness slider on the edge of the screen while you use other apps.
- Usage access (PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS): to know which app is in front, so BrightWise can learn per-app brightness. Only the app's name is saved, on your phone. We never read content inside other apps.
- Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE): to keep the slider running, with a visible notification, while you use your phone.
- Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): to show that ongoing notification so you always know the slider is on and can turn it off.
- Internet and network state (INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE): for Google Play purchases, crash reports and usage statistics.
- Google Play billing (BILLING): to buy the upgrade.
- Keep awake (WAKE_LOCK): used by Google's libraries to send reports reliably.
- Advertising ID and attribution (AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION, install referrer, Google services): added by Google Analytics for Firebase to measure installs. BrightWise shows no ads.
BrightWise does not use an accessibility service, the camera, microphone, location, contacts or your files.
4. How we use data
Only to run BrightWise, learn your brightness preferences on your phone, fix crashes, understand which features are used, and confirm purchases. We don't sell or rent data, and we don't use it for advertising.
5. Your rights
Wherever you live, including under laws like the GDPR (Europe) and the CCPA (California), you can:
- Access or delete the data on your phone at any time: everything is cleared when you uninstall the App or go to Settings > Apps > BrightWise > Storage > Clear storage.
- Ask us to access or delete crash and usage data linked to your app installation, or to object to its use. Email [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
- Complain to your local data protection authority.
See Delete your BrightWise data for step-by-step instructions.
6. Children
BrightWise is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child has sent us data, contact us and we'll delete it.
7. Security
On-device data is kept in the app's private storage, which other apps can't read. Data sent to Google is encrypted in transit.
8. Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the effective date. Important changes will also be noted in the app.
